Thing # 11.5

1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey? I loved the voki's and the skype traning. I will also be using the PBS website and embedding their vidoes into my activboard lessons.

2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals? I have learned about so many other ways to access important videos to use in my classroom!

3. Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you? I am suprised how easy it has become for me to embed video or other codes into things. Once you get the hang of it is is super fun, and when you go to wensites now you notice user features that you never noticed before. I truly believe that this traning will make me a much better teacher. I loved it last summer too!

4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept? NOTHING. It is so user friendly and fun. Please just offer it every summer!

Thing # 11

Digital Citizenship: I found this article and it really sums everything needed to know:
Our kids need to understand these things!

Many agree that literacy is important. (These are, except where noted, taken from the comments from my post: Digital Literacy Comes Home.)

Stephen Downes says, "Indeed, a person who reads a website and concludes that it's true, no matter what it says, is dangerously illiterate."

Tom Hoffman says, "Check the source's references. Confirm information by looking at multiple sources. Read carefully."

David Warlick says, "Instead of starting with a web page, displayed on the whiteboard, they [teachers] should start with Google, demonstrate how they found the page, the considerations and decisions they applied to select that page, and include in the presentation, the evidence that what's being presented is valuable...When we model authority, we shouldn't be surprised when students look for authority in every piece of information."

Kristin Hokanson says, "At the upper level, kids need to be taught HOW to access credible sources...via data bases, advanced google searches and other good search strategies. If we don't, they will continue to go to the first sources available".

A lesson in my classroom about digital citizenship would focus on safety. My mantra would be "don't believe everything that you read" and ALWAYS consider the source. Make sure that all websites that you are using are from reliable and reputable sources such as google, CNN, ect.

Second life. Wow I had no idea that something like this was out there. I named myself Alexandra Wroth. Hilarious right? It sounded so fancy. I joined a second life that takes place aboard a ship in the sea. This to me was basically like a video game where you can meet others and really have a "second life". I could see how this could get addicting! The music was so beautiful also. Flying was amazing! This was so fun!

Thing # 9

It is important for students to use slideshare because this is a GREAT way to get useful information in the form of Powerpoint or other software. You can search for many topics and it's a great resource-sharing site. You can type in any topic and get ANYTHING you need. This would also be valuable for the teacher as he or she could possibly find specific presentations to show kids and save a little time!

Here is a great one that I found:

Thing # 8

wow. I would never use screencasting in my classroom, this whole THING was confusing and I could not get the websites to open while I was on the screencast site.

I think that I was able to get my voice embedded but never knew how to navigate the web while keeping all of those windows open.

This is definitely for very experienced users. Maybe good for a computer or tech class in high school or college?

Thing # 7

Watch the full episode. See more Through a Dogs Eyes.

This site was amazing and I found so many topics on PBS that would be valuable for my classroom. PBS had many humanitarian and heart-warming stories that would be amazing to use for tribes in the classroom or just a fun example during wants and needs in social studies. I could present these on the activboard and it would be amazing.

I found this awesome video on how to use the itouch in the classroom or library!

itouch apps
Well I don't have an iphone but I actually have a motorola cliq...which is t-mobile's version of the iphone. I have actually had much experience with educational apps. I have downloaded many for my toddler actually to get me through long waits at the dr's office or boredom in the car. There are also many for school age children to increase vocabulary skills, there are math drills, and I even used the GRE prep app to get myself ready for the test this summer.
1: Downloaded apps:
Word of the Day- learn a new word a day with your kiddos
Google Earth: geography on the spot
2: Ways to use itouch in the library:

Thing # 5

Facebook and Twitter.
I LOVE Facebook and check and upload daily to my personal account. I don't think 1that it is a useful tool for elementary, especially 1st grade. I can see using it to discuss your classes in college or maybe high school....to update on assignments, ect. I don't think that it is actually an appropriate tool for teachers to use with students however...too personal. I really think that the only appropriate medium for these tools is the college classroom, aside from social networking. Twitter is an excellent tool for open forum discussions for college classrooms, rather than closed email lists.

Thing # 4

Uploading video to Youtube and Teachertube! SO FUN! There are so many advantages to using these resources in the classroom. I can search for materials that I find on the internet to go with our units, and I can also upload videos taken on my cell phone of the kids in action, upload them to youtube and then post them to our class blog! This is a video of my son that I made this summer. He loves to dance!

Thing # 4

I love Skype and I have to say that most of my experience with it is actually from watching Oprah!! She has been using it on her show for years and it is amazing. I think that it would be amazing to use in the classroom to connect to other classes across the world. The problem we face is that our laptops are not camera enabled...so I am not sure how we could address that. I am going to speak to our librarian to see if there is some sort of attachment or converter that we could use...or if we could check out webcams and do it that way. It would be awesome to have Skype palls as"trouts" suggested. I found a cool website that actually shows you different ways of using it in your classroom.

THING # 2

WORDLE: I lOVE wordle..we used this in our classes this year after the librarian taught us all about it. So fun! Kids could use this as a beautiful opening page for a project or on a storyboard for a presentation.
Wordle: mary katherine

GLOGSTER: It must be having trouble today...wouldn't load and very slow. I bookmarked it though because it looks super cool! This would be a nice tool for the kids to make "cycle projects" for science.

ANIMOTO: We use this a LOT a Spring Branch Elementary...especially for school-wide presentations. I did one this summer on my kids for Field Day. So fun and the music makes this site so special. The kids get SO excited! Kids can use this for projects in science especially, not to mention art and music. I use it to wrap up a unit..I take many pictures of my kids and what we are working on.

VOKI: How fun! Each kid could make their own! We could also create characters from books!

LIBRARY 2PLAY 2 HERE WE GO AGAIN THING #1

I loved the video and I think that our librarian could absolutely play an important role. She could help the teachers and the kids to filter information and learn how to really dig without needless surfing. I just wish that I could have had access to all of this in college-especially Google Scholar. It was awesome how the student was able to use blogs and other sources to find the information needed. Not to mention books are SO crazy expensive in college....sometimes more than my semesters tuition. I am in the process of admission to grad school right now and my degree has an emphasis on digital learning. We are to receive ipads as part of the package to do our work on. HOW EXCITING! I hope it happens for me and I am accepted!
So happy to be in Library2PLAY again. Can't wait to learn even more!
